Another year, another laundry list of challenges met, achievements earned, and lessons learned. 2017-18 ASFA-CW Student Literary Achievements & Awards

Jane Ann Baggett – Awarded First Place for Fiction and received a Certificate of Merit for Poetry in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Daniel Blokh – Awarded two national Gold Medals for Poetry, two regional Gold Keys in Poetry, and a regional Honorable Mention for Personal Essay & Memoir in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. Awarded First Place in Princeton University’s Leonard L. Milberg ’53 High School Poetry Prize contest. Awarded Second Place in Kenyon College’s Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize and received a partial scholarship to attend the Kenyon Young Writers’ Workshop. Received Honorable Mention for Poetry in the national YoungArts awards contest. Published two poetry chapbooks—Grimmening (Diode Editions) and Holding Myself Hostage in the Kitchen (Lit City Press)—and individual poems in Cosmonauts Avenue, Kenyon Review, Permafrost, DIALOGIST and several other publications. Nominated for a Puschart Prize by the editors of Permafrost for his poem “Abcedarian for the English Language.”

Annabelle Blomeley – Published her essay entitled “An Ode to the Imaginary Intruder in My House” entitled in the May 2018 edition of Oddball Magazine, her short story entitled “The Singing Scallop” in Crashtest Magazine, and an untitled poem in the Fall 2017 issue of Aura.

Avery Brooks – Awarded the Mozelle Purvis Shirley Senior Portfolio Scholarship from the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Cadence Received the Exceptional Literary Content award in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Emma Camp – Awarded two regional Silver Keys for Poetry and a regional Honorable Mention for Poetry in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. Named one of ten nationwide finalists for in the poetry category of the Columbia College Chicago Young Authors Competition. Received Honorable Mention in the Gannon University High School Poetry Contest. Awarded the Leah Marks Memorial Senior Portfolio Scholarship, Second Place in the individual Poetry category, and Third Place for Fiction in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest. Awarded First Place in Alabama’s District #3 Poetry Out Loud regional competition in the category of Original Poetry. Published individual poems in Inklette and Alexandria Quarterly.

Scarlett Connolly – Published her poem entitled “Daisy” in Apprehension magazine’s April 2018 issue.

Abbe Coulter – Awarded Third Place for Fiction in the Columbia College Chicago Young Authors Competition. Completed “Voyages,” a full novel manuscript of 50,000+ words during National Novel Writing Month in November.

Tyler Dalzell – Awarded a full scholarship to attend the University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly Writers House creative writing workshop in the summer of 2018. Awarded Third Place Award for Poetry and received a Judge’s Special Recognition for Fiction in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest. Awarded a full scholarship to attend the Rhodes Summer Writing Institute in the summer of 2017.

Lauryn-Elizabeth Dewberry – Received a regional Gold Key for Flash Fiction, two regional Silver Keys for Poetry, and a regional Honorable Mention for Short Fiction in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest. Received Judge’s Special Recognition for Poetry in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Minna Goldberg – Received a Certificate of Merit for Fiction in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Katy Hargett (ASFA-CW ’17) – Named a Finalist in Creative Nonfiction and in Poetry in the national YoungArts awards contest.

Kameron Helms – Awarded a national Silver Medal for Poetry, regional Gold Keys in Poetry and Flash Fiction, and two regional Honorable Mentions for Poetry in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest.

Dan Lucia – Awarded a regional Gold Key in Poetry and two regional Silver Keys for Poetry in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Tess Moore – Received Judge’s Special Recognition for Poetry in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Colton Reynolds – Received a Certificate of Merit for Poetry in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Allison Sharp – Received Honorable Mention recognition for Personal Essay & Memoir in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest.

Blanca Tallaj – Awarded the Curnutt Family Senior Portfolio Scholarship in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Ashley Tate – Awarded Third Place in Alabama’s District #3 Poetry Out Loud regional competition in the category of Original Poetry.

Elijah Thompson – Received a Certificate of Merit for Fiction in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.

Emily Willford – Received Judge’s Special Recognition for Poetry in the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s statewide High School Literary Arts Awards contest.
